In case you couldn't bare to read the wiki with all the spelling mistakes and typo's, I fixed them. I also added a little info. Of the worlds surface land roughly 10% are Limestone/Karst areas. Of that 80% is Limestone and 20% Karst. Karst is a type of Limestone. So not much of the lands surface has entrances to huge caverns. Matter of fact in my home state of Arkansas, Newton County has the most caves known around 500 and of those only 50 are over 500 feet in length, but of those 50 quit a few are in the miles of length. Hopefully that gives you some idea about how caves are dispersed around the globe. For example in my home state of Arkansas we have 2600 known caves, geologist estimate there could be 5K to 15K however. Much of the state, the northern half which has large caves remains unexplored because it is mostly private land. Other areas probably have similar circumstances. Let me say something else about cartography in general. There are not clubs for mapping city, state and national parks, zoo's, large tracks of land, lake boundaries, golf courses, hiking trails, biking trails, horse trails, sections of river for kyacking and canoeing, etc. There are many things that could be mapped by interested parties using our software. It just so happens that cavers are the only folks I know of that are into this ancient style of cartography. Larry Gray la...@ar... |
