Just a hunch but I'd bet with the correct AWT peers implemented to use
Java-GNOME, Swing would 'just work.'  Unfortunately, AWT peers aren't on
the todo list for this project.  That, however, doesn't stop someone
else from using Java-GNOME as a base to implement AWT peers.

any feedback from developers 'in the know?'
