Canonical has developed a new library for managing system tray features. As of Java 1.7.0_07, the system tray library does not support the new library. This means the stock Ubuntu OS does not support java applications that use the system tray.

JAppIndicator is a library that attempts to provide an interface for java applications to use the app-indicator library present in the most popular linux desktop OS's.
