Hello dear co-developers, for all except finance I plan to change the license from GPL to LGPL. Please comment on this within the next 8 weeks, stating your agreement or=20 disagreement. Please note that of course I can't and won't change the license without eve= ry=20 single contributor's agreement. In particular I need to agree: z0ra for her contributions to libs-swing-action zergus and Ragnor for their various contributions to various JAPI libraries. The reason why I want to change the license is to allow JAPI libraries to b= e=20 used by commercial applications without license implications. This shall replace the "gentleman's agreement" that currently zergus and I = use=20 for commercial use of JAPI. Hi dear co-devs, though I currently prefer Log4J over java.util.logging, I have some new pla= ns=20 about the logging system. Personally I see multiple uses of logging. Or multiple aspects of the same= =20 purpose. Of course, one context is, as a developer, to know what's going on in your = own=20 system. But another purpose is that we, as developers, should also be able to extra= ct=20 as much information as possible from log files sent to us by our users when= =20 they encounter problems. Because of that, I see the following requirements, which are not fully met = by=20 existing logging systems known to me, neither by Log4J nor by=20 java.util.logging: * Each message must be given a unique ID that can be used to uniquely ident= ify=20 that particular log message. * I18N/L10N of log messages, so users can understand them. (Currently we do= =20 not have users that use Gridarta and cannot undstand English very well, but= =20 this might change in future) * Sometimes a unique log message is still used at more than a single source= =20 code location. Therefore the output of a log must contain source file name= =20 and source line number (such information is available in our builds). * The interface for using the log API should be as easy as possible, that=20 means ** The decision whether something should be logged or not (whether the mess= age=20 is included in the current log granularity) should be made as fast as=20 possible (that's a nice to have requirement, not a must requirement). ** The interface must support varargs for creating the log message for two= =20 reasons: *** Makes the interface easy and nice to use *** Prevents formatting from taking place before the decision whether or no= t=20 to log is made, thus removing many of the needs for checking the log level= =20 granularity outside the logging system. Additionally I've setup some further requirements for a logging system: * The logging system should be usable as facade to Log4J or as facade to=20 java.util.logging or as standalone. * The logging system should provide an SPI for generating formatted log=20 messages. It should come with the following implementations: ** fast, no formatting, just string concatenation ** use java.text.MessageFormat ** use java.util.Formatter ** use both java.text.MessageFormat / java.util.Formatter, using an=20 intelligent decision mechanism to choose which formatting system to use. * The logging system should provide an SPI for getting the format string of= =20 log messages. It should come with the following implementations: ** fast, takes the key as format string ** use a resource bundle ** use JAPI's ActionFactory * The logging system should provide an SPI for generating the actual log. I= t=20 should come with the following implementations: ** stream logging ** facade to Log4J ** facade to java.util.logging * The logging system should be self-configuring using properties and such,= =20 using a convenient default which suites most users. * The logging system should use Enums for logging. ** The enum class should be choosable, but the logging system should provid= e a=20 reasonable default. Am I reinventing the wheel? Yes, definitely. But I'm reinventing the wheel= =20 with tools and experience available that weren't for Log4J and=20 java.util.logging, mainly varargs. Dear People, (intended audience: map makers, active gamers and developers of crossfire and derived mmorpgs, especially angelion, crossfire, daimonin) The DaimoninEditor, Daimonin's successor of the CFJavaEditor, has "grown up" and become a sourceforge project of its own. It is called "Gridarta" now. The name Gridarta combines "grid" and "art" and coincidently also reminds of "Siddhartha". The project "Gridarta" was founded by zergus and me (Cher). @devs: I hope I have added all relevant (in the sense of interested in active Java map editor development) developers of Crossfire and Daimonin to the Gridarta development team. If you think you should belong there but were forgotten, please send me an e-mail. IMPORTANT @devs: Also don't forget to subscribe the gridarta mailling lists. @all: read more on the new gridarta homepage http://gridarta.sourceforge.net/ CURRENT PROJECT PLAN 1. Import source of both, Crossfire and Daimonin's Java map editors in Gridarta. (done) 2. Setup build environment which fits the needs of both projects. (done) 3. Release the first version of Gridarta for Daimonin. 4. Replace Daimonin's Java map editor in Daimonin's cvs repository with something that gets Gridarta instead. 5. Merge Crossfire's editor into Daimonin's editor, whilst creating a test suite which performs the required tests whether gridarta works correctly with current crossfire resp. daimonin data. FINAL STATEMENT Long live Crossfire and Daimonin! Happy mapping :) -- Christian Hujer Free software developer E-Mail: ch...@ri... WWW: http://www.riedquat.de/ |

Hello Ilia Dumov, (I'm resending this because my ISP had some mail delivery problems. Sorry if you received this mail twice) (Please be careful when responding as the lists are public and the license, if approved, shouldn't go to the lists) for two open source projects I would like to apply for Open Source Licenses of your products IntelliJ IDEA and TMate. First Project: JAPI URL: http://japi.sourceforge.net/ IRC: irc://irc.freenode.net:6667/%23japi Mailing Lists: http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=149894 Project Participation Confirmation: http://sourceforge.net/project/memberlist.php?group_id=149894 Note: JAPI, as for the nature of a library project, is somewhat quiet. JAPI is used by Gridarta (see second project). Second Project: Gridarta URL: http://gridarta.sourceforge.net/ IRC: irc://irc.freenode.net:6667/%23gridarta Mailling Lists: http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=166996 Forums: http://www.daimonin.net/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewforum&f=8 Project Participation Confirmation: http://sourceforge.net/project/memberlist.php?group_id=166996 Gridarta is the successor of the map editors of Daimonin and Crossfire. Daimonin and Crossfire are very active 2D MMORPG projects. http://crossfire.real-time.com/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/crossfire irc://irc.freenode.net:6667/%23crossfire http://www.daimonin.net/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/daimonin irc://irc.freenode.net:6667/%23daimonin Gridarta exists for two weeks now, but Crossfire exists since 1992, Daimonin since 2002, the Java map editor (which was now renamed to Gridarta and made a project of its own) since 1999. I hope this qualifies for making an exception from the rule that a project needs to be at least 3 months old. I applied for an Open Source License for Daimonin MMORPG about a year ago. That license expires in June. That license does not need renewal because the Daimonin editor is superseded by Gridarta. Thank you very much for having granted the Daimonin MMORPG License. Using IntelliJ IDEA is a real pleasure. Kind regards -- Christian Hujer |

Hi, I found some stuff in 0.9 which didn't work and therefore prepare a patch release. It was the GrepJAPI.java in the I/O guide and a class in the JEduca prog. Main JAPI was not affected. If somebody knows something that's broken and should be urgently fixed, tell me, so it will get into 0.9.1. I plan to release 0.9.1 at Saturday (2006-04-22). Also I want to put the release description file (used for freshmeat and sourceforge) in the repository and formalize requirements on the release description file. Currently, I can think of the following requirements of information to be listed in a release description file: * Short, around 200-250 characters * include release version number * include minimum description of what JAPI is * include important changes / enhancements * include release target audience Can somebody think of some more? I will add an empty file to trunk and merge that to Cher :) -- Christian Hujer Free software developer E-Mail: Chr...@it... WWW: http://www.itcqis.com/ http://daimonin.sf.net/ |

Hello dear co-developers, here's a hint on running the JUnit unit tests from IntelliJ IDEA. If IntelliJ IDEA is configured correctly, just go to the Project Explorer -> Packages, rightclick the test package tree (currently test or test.net.sf.japi, depending on your view) and choose "Run Tests in ..." or press Ctrl+Shift+F10. Ctrl+Shift+F10 also works on other occasions. If you're inside a JUnit test class, it will execute the nearest test method. If you're inside a JUnit test class source but outside the test class or otherwise not nearby a test method, it will execute the complete JUnit test case suite of that test class. IntelliJ will then start its own testrunner and generate a nice tree. Currently we only have 3 Unit Test classes so far, but the number will hopefully grow soon :) Cu all :) -- Christian Hujer Free software developer E-Mail: Chr...@it...
