Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Hi Alejandro, bootMonitor can boot with dhcp. You just have to write: bin/cdstool configurator -setenv BOOTCONF=DHCP See the Installation Guide (p44) and bootConfig(1M). You might have to put the "s=", "f=" and "r=" arguments directly in the XML file. Eric From ca...@ma... Because the administrator the network have to work. Thank's for all. It's very exciting to compile Chorus.... Hello all, A Jaluna-1 system archive can now be built completely on a FreeBSD host. This FreeBSD host port was contributed by Chuck Tuffli. The change is readily available in the CVS tree. As this required some changes in the CDS sources, I added the cds components to the CVS tree. The other components touched are dev_tools and nucleus. You can download the whole CVS tree using: % cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/jaluna login % cvs -z3 -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/jaluna co c5 (takes time) Once dowloaded, look at cds/FreeBSD/README for more details on how to build. Hi all, For those interested, I'm porting jamvm as a background-of-background task. See jamvm at sf.net/projects/jamvm. Work is progressing slowly, right now I'm just able to build a jamvm binary for PPC. The next step is to build classpath, then to test. I can pass around my patches to those interested. Hello Nitin, See my answers inlined. > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > Subject: > [Jaluna-dev-apps] Hotrestart > From: > Nitin Katiyar <ka...@cd...> > Date: > Fri, 02 May 2003 14:09:24 +0530 > To: > jal...@li... > > > 1. Can anybody clarify me why executing image of a process is kept in > Persistent memory in Hotrestart feature? This is to ensure that the address space at which it is running remains available after restart, especially for supervisor-mode actors. This could be optimized, eg to use "persistent memory ranges" instead of persistent memory. This abstraction does not exist in the current version. It would be easier to implement in Jaluna-1 than in the version for which the Hot Restart feature was designed (ChorusOS 4.0). > > Is this block memory is accessible by any application? Manual says > that this memory area can be shared using rgnMapFromActor system call > but it is also written that only supervisor can share persistent memory. Sharing is not supported though pmmAllocate() because PM is always mapped at the same address, and we cannot garantee availability of the required address range in another user actor that would attempt to share the PM block by calling pmmAllocate() with the same name. OTOH two cooperating actors may share PM memory using rgnMapFromActor(). However if the first actor frees the PM block and the second one still maps it, and then the block is recycled and given to a third actor, some unwanted behaviour (read: nasty bugs) may occur. > 2. Hi all, As you may have noticed, Jaluna's documentation is now available as PDF files. This format is far easier to deal with than HTML pages on Jaluna's web site. It had been, in fact, the most frequent request we had. To get the PDF's, go to www.jaluna.com, and follow the link "Developer Zone/Download". Click on the "agree" button, then go to the bottom of the page and click on the "here" link. This presents a small form where you can enter some basic identification information. This is not compulsory (ie you can enter dummy values to stay anonymous), but it is a good idea to provide your real identity as it is the only way for us to keep track of users. Naturally, these data will stay within Jaluna and won't be used to spam you. Happy reading, Eric |

Folks, I have set up a couple of new projects on the Jaluna "Tasks" page (see https://sourceforge.net/pm/?group_id=65309). These are tools that would really add value to the OS, allowing to use it in new areas. Anybody can contribute to these projects. We have described them as much as we could is smaller tasks, some of which are quite lightweight. So, one can effectively contribute in a few hours/days. The task pages show to whom each task is assigned, so anybody can pick up any task which is assigned to "None". If interested, feel free to ask more information on these projects. You can also ask for advice if you pick one up. We at Jaluna, or others on this mailing list, may have already implemented a similar service on Jaluna/ChorusOS or other, or may provide insight on how to use Jaluna. We're willing to help ! Naturally there are many other things to add to Jaluna. If you have brilliant ideas, speak up ! We'll try to set up the projects you have in mind. We also have some other ideas. So, say tuned for other projects coming in the next days/weeks. Eric |
