This new release brings many additions and fixes. The blog has the full notes. Highlights: procedural optimizer results in a 30-90% performance improvement; runtime view allows for time-linked views of conflict set, buffer contents and states, in addition to the copious log output; better memory use in the IDE. The IDE updates now require Eclipse 3.6 (Helios). This is not a bad thing, as Helios provides a much improved installation experience via the Eclipse Marketplace. Just search for "act-r" and you'll find it. The core, as usual, is independent of the IDE. For all the details: http://jactr.org/node/111 Core: http://jactr.org/node/105 (API changes) http://jactr.org/node/104 (procedural optimizer) IDE changes: http://jactr.org/node/106 (runtime perspective) http://jactr.org/node/110 (synchronizing the model and IDE) |

Long waits are over (at least one of them). There is a new release of jACT-R. New, improved, faster, better, stronger. The core has been revamped. The gui is now running within the open source IDE Eclipse. Eclipse must be installed to use all the nice bells and whistles. If you are hard core, you can still use the command line [if so, let me know and I'll put together some docs] Installation instructions: 1) Download Eclipse : http://eclipse.org/downloads/index.php 2) Start up Eclipse and Add a new installation location: Menu Help -> Software Updates -> Find and Install.. Search for new features to install -> New Remove Site... Name: jACT-R Site: http://simon.lrdc.pitt.edu/~harrison/jactr/eclipse/ from there it's fairly obvious. 3) Restart 4) To help you get started with jACT-R in Eclipse, I've created some quick and dirty help docs Menu Help -> Cheat Sheets.. -> ACT-R -> ACT-R and Eclipse ACT-R and Eclipse : covers the basics ACT-R Models and Reality : covers some more advanced issues dealing with multiple models, whacky interfaces to 'reality', time control, and the like. You can install the spatial support, but it is currently incomplete. [next few days should see the release.. and i'll bust my hump up to the poster session to get any existing models up and running in the new system - just send them to me] You may notice that Eclipse is a fairly big beast. It is a complete Java development environment - I could trim it down so that it is just enough to run jACT-R - but the way it is set up now, if you want to muck around with any of the guts, you can import the org.jactr plugins into Eclipse and tweak away. If you experience any problems (other than those related to the spatial extension) bounce me a line. For now, I'm pouring myself a drink. =============================================== "The unexamined life isn't worth living; however, the over-examined life isn't living." Anthony M. Harrison, M.S. Hola, all. I would greatly appreciate it if everyone working on *any* aspect of jACT-R (/PM, IDE, ACT-R/S) would subscribe to the developer mailing list. Now that there is actually more than one person, coordination and effective communication are fairly important. Now for some updates. To better support multiple users, I've begun a fairly lengthy process of package, class, and interface reorganizations. The biggest of these being the introduction of the RealityInterface classes (doc/RealityInterface.doc for a description). This is now the backbone of the perceptual & manual interfaces. Both of these systems have been reimplemented, and partially tested. Hopefully I will get a chance to test them fully soon. Next up, I've been gradually going through the high-level interfaces trying to document them in a somewhat intelligent manner and removing unnecessary methods and fields. Thank god for Eclipse's dynamic compiling. It's enabled me to make the necessary corrections throughout the entire source tree. It is unlikely that there will be any major API changes from here on out. Maybe a method here or there, but the major changes have happened. If anything else changes, or someone things something should be changed - jactr-developer is the venue for it. In support of this, the build.xml (for ant) has a build task to generate the javadocs. It will create a tree of javadocs under {jACT-R}/javadoc. One for the core interfaces, one for the current gui, one for the reality interface (since it requires so much explaining) and one for the default implementations of everything. If, as you are looking through some of the code, you come across something that I have not documented particularly well (which is likely) - bounce me a line and I'll explain it to you and then cut and paste my answer into the javadocs. ================================================= "The unexamined life isn't worth living; however, the over-examined life isn't living." I've been sitting on some fairly large changes for sometime now. With the ACT-R workshop right around the corner, I figured I should get it out the door. Changes include: - Number of GUI bug fixes (I can't believe I released it in the first Beta with that many problems) - Modifications to the event delivery mechanism, including a modelStarting event for ModelRunEvents. - Full support for javascriptable productions (ScriptableAction/Condition) including GUI support (although it is a little flaky with the displaying in the production editor). - Better preference support (.jactr/ide.properties) - All jACT-R user configuration and customizations are stored in ${HOME}/.jactr/ - temp files are also located there. - other bug fixes that I forgot to document. An updated tech spec and javadoc will be coming soon-ish. ================================================= Anthony M.
