Shared COVERART titles (i.e., due to merging) are not handled consistently in the publication editing interface. Changing the sole artist's name causes the existing COVERART to be removed from the publication, and a new COVERART added to just the publication being edited. Changing one artist's name when multiple artists are credited causes that existing artist to be removed from the COVERART title and the new artist to be added, affecting all publications sharing that COVERART title.
I suppose an appropriate treament is to alter the artist fields' rendition and editability to be similar to what is now done for other content -- gray when shared, forcing the editor to go edit the COVERART title directly in such cases -- although why the fields are in this state will not be obvious to the casual editor.

One problem with going the route of graying out coverart edit fields when editing a pub record is that unlike other content records which might be grayed out and uneditable, coverart titles cannot be removed from a pub via the "Remove Titles From This Pub" edit/rmtitles.cgi interface. It would not be good to get into a situation where a coverartists cannot be edited or removed short of deleting the coverart title (which is shared and why it is gray to begin with) or the entire pub record.
I personally feel coverart titles should be handled in a similar fashion to other content titles instead of their present special handling (and only have minor special handling--perhaps as much as "container" title do).
