It seems that the "official" meaning is that of the British slang word "git" (pig-headed).

So, why would Linus have chosen to name this tool "pig-headed"? He states somewhere that he always names tools after himself, which is clear in the case of Linux. How about git?

Well he explicitly says he calls stupid and ugly everyone who does not agree with him... This also, appears to be a joke. More like a style he gives to himself.

However he DOES have strong opinions ; most famous example of this at :

The thread is interesting to read for anyone interested in OS design or open source ; two important points for people who are not familiar with the names and concepts here :
- Tanenbaum (the guy Linus is almost insulting) was an internationally known and respected teacher and author
- Twenty years later, Tanenbaum is basically proven wrong (basically nothing of what he predicts in the thread happened)

In this video he actually seems to be obstinate and firmly resolved, and always in a fun and clever way, which is the exact definition of a fun pig-headed.

Linus is also known as a benevolent dictator (The benevolent dictator is a more modern version of the classical “enlightened despot”, being an absolute ruler who exercises his or her political power for the benefit of the people rather than exclusively for his or her own benefit)
but i think he's more pig headed...
He found that Bitkeeper have some issues, so he sais ti himself that he can write something better and he wrote Git in 2 weeks !
a pig headed person is a person hard to control (obstinate) and that why he made a distributive system.
