I watched the video "Killer presentation skills" on YouTube. I was really surprised because 41% of people are afraid to make an oral presentation.
In this video it is said that:
1/ eye contact is very important to tell the truth. And I think that Linus uses very well this "eye contact"
2/ Power of the Pause. You need to stop sometimes, to show that what you said is very important. Linus uses this technique.
3/ Body Language: Don't put hands in pockets. That's exactly what does Linus. He doesn't put his hands in his pockets.
4/ Don't be behind the podium. Linus is not behind it.
Moreover, I would like to add that Linus does a lot of jokes, he speaks fluently...
So as a conclusion, I think that Linus has very good presentation skills

I agree with johndoe983 that he has pretty good presentation skills. For me, it is only a kind of marketing to the people thint that he is humble (hehehehe...), as it is marked on the slide credits ([0:02:38]).
I have to agree that Linus has a lot of presentation skills, but i didn't enjoy it and i don't think he's that funny:
I hated when he attacked other systems, it's not humble.. by doing that he didn't engage all the audiance.. i said to myself : who the hell he thinks he is ?
And by saying : you are ugly and stupid if you don't use Git .. well if there weren't a centralized system, he couldn't built a distributive system .. he's intellingent because he could benefit from other's mistakes but he is so arrogant, and this is not a good criteria ...
i can also say that sometimes he was relaxed.. but sometimes we can see that he was worried (his voici trembles)
there are a lot of things i didn't like about Linus especially when he said that he didn't prepare for this conference, because he was eating sushi last night ... and we can see how many people were there listening at him !! and it's obvious that he didn't prepare (because he forgot to talk in his presentation about a crucial point, then one of the audiance ask him about it) ....some respect!!
maybe it's his sense of humor but i didn't like it !!!
I totally approve the kind of humor he uses as I'm a bit like that. What is more fun than playing the role of an arrogant desicable person? I understand your reaction najosf but I think it's a bit too extreme. People who know Linus are used to this kind of rhetoric and this arrogant tone he uses. They also know that he's not really like that, in fact, he's very humble. The advantage of such a direct speech is that you get straight to the point. You don't make people feel like morons but you make them laugh thinking about it and they might make jokes about it later on. This helps spread the word about GIT, it's a matter of getting the attention on yourself and creating a recognizable identity for Linus.
Ask yourself this : If he spoke in a serious way, not flaming the other systems and making jokes about the audience, would you really be able to listen to him for more than one hour? I think no. At least, if people weren't convinced by GIT, he tried to make them chuckle (see the little easter eggs in his slides).
Concerning his presentation skills, sometimes he doesn't seem to find his words (which is understable) and falls back by making a joke on the audience or CVS, this is really well done I think and it helped create a nice atmosphere. The only thing that bothered me is that he avoided the problem of implementation and sometimes justified using GIT by asking why people would do it in CVS or Subversion. He kind of lacked a convincing explanation given the fact he didn't explain how you are supposed to switch from those to GIT.
He's getting my interest!
So, the answer of the question is: public speaking no, but he likes it!
How did i come to my answer:
1. he's anxious, nervous - he's keeping his hand in his pocket to calm himself a little bit down.(like he could do it, he’s on fire!)
2. he isn't prepared for the presentation. he just speaks, because he relies on what he knows, on his experience; and he does know ... how to get people's attention.
3.the jokes. that was a good one. he's just like me, only in spoken words.
4. he does take it to the limit with the joke of "ugly and stupid" - were there any persons who used CVS in the room? Weren’t they upset?
This was my first impression, although i also laughed at hearing this joke. I agree with Jean, Linus is getting thru the crowd by making this kind of jokes, aaaand i read on Pierre's found site: "Why the 'git' name?" –“git” is British slang for "pig headed”. Funny and not boring! For example, I was at the e-marketing Conference at Palais des Congres. I have a passion for marketing, I listened a lot of people talking about it, but I really enjoined a presentation with examples and jokes.(in French, imagine that!)
This is what Linus is doing. Getting the attention of the public with jokes but remains in the limits of the application he’s interested in.
I wrote in the first paragraph that he doesn’t like public speaking but I can see that he’s enjoying himself after all. He’s babbling at the beginning but after the ”ugly and stupid” he’s like fire in the summer. Never to stop!
He loves questions and he’s relying on that. He’s a little bit demanding the questions he wants.
Finally, he made me watch the video till the end!
I have to admit that I count myself among those who enjoyed watching the video thanks to Linus rethoric and presentaion skills. I would have never thought that 2 minutes before I started, I would get that interested in SCM issues.
I think he's the kind of speakers either you "love" or you "hate", but it doesn't really matter from the moment that his strength remains in the fact that even if you don't like him you'll remember him, and that's really good marketing.
We could definitly forget about his "ugly" slides ;-) , despite which he succeded in capturing the whole audience attention during more than one hour.

i didn't say i didn't find Linus interesting, i said i didn't enjoy his speech.. and i have the right to .... i think ...
i wanted to hear all his speech to know where he'll end up and what he will say next.. but every time that he was making a joke i was saying to myself NOT AGAIN please ... :p
anyway, i think Linus is a great person (who wouldn't say that?) but i didn't enjoy this presentation...

he is quite good! and I enjoyed too the video. however sometimes his argumentation could be sum up in "that's not the right thing to do" it's a bit light... (he did that a couple of times but I don't know where exactly in the video)
