Hi Zdeněk I had the same problem, but after some experiments, i found out that the hotplug system was giving me troubles. When you do modprobe irlan, the hotplug system tries to configure it, and since this is not setup right, the configuration never ends. When you then do ifconfig, it hangs, since hotplug is already doing that. I had to modify the net.agent file, in order to stop hotplug from configuring. After that I was able to do ifconfig irlan0 192.168.2.2 netmask xxxx broadcast xxx and irlan works fine. I am using redhat 8.0 with kernel 2.4.18, but hotplug is probably installed on many other systems as well.
