I would use "ephpod" (its a schmall windows program) http://www.ephpod.com/ to copy the mp3 files to the ipod! you can even make an ephpod folder, with= in=20 you place some directory references(is this the correct english word?) and = if=20 ephpod is correctly configured just pressing on the sync and quit button in= =20 the start-programm-menu is doing everything for you! have fun! Problem is, I use an old Mac OS 9 computer for >playing mp3s, my OS X laptop has no mp3s on it and no room for them, my If you can mount the mp3s on a linux (or maybe os x) machine then you can use SyncPOD http://freshmeat.net/projects/syncpod/ which simply copies a directory of mp3s onto the ipod with the appropriate database manipulations. There are also a number of other such programs to copy mp3s to the ipod from linux. You can't just copy the mp3s on with cp, you have to put them in a special place and create a database that the ipod uses to generate the menus and find the files in it's filesystem (it doesn't do this itself when it boots). If os 9 doesn't allow you to share the mp3s on a network, then maybe one of the linux ftp filesystems will work? If you have less than 10GB of mp3s to sync, mount the ipod on your linux box. ftp the mp3s to the ipod and put them in a temporary directory. Then use syncpod to sync them from the temp directory on the ipod to the ipod's own structure (which will copy them, hence you can only use half the ipod). Then delete the temporary directory if you want to use the ipod to sneakernet other random files. The only issue is that SyncPOD is such that if you delete the source directory, it will sync this change and delete all the music on the ipod -- it's designed to sync your computer's collection with the ipod. This is a problem if you want to sync more songs after you have deleted the temporary directory. -- Tom Parker - to...@ca... - http://www.carrott.org |

Hi, A friend of mine got an ipod for christmas and he wanted me to put some music in it. Problem is, I use an old Mac OS 9 computer for playing mp3s, my OS X laptop has no mp3s on it and no room for them, my windows computer refuses to run iTunes, it just quits instantly, (possibly because it doesn't like my driver debugger, I need to try it without that loaded). And none of my linux or BSD computers have any mp3s either. It seems the only way I can put mp3s on his computer would be to ftp them like 10 at a time from the OS 9 to the OS X and then copy them from there to the ipod which is a pain in the ass and then if he wants to use any other computer to get songs, he can't because they're limited to one computer. I think its an ipod mini which would mean gen 4? Its small, 20 GB, "MP000 Model: MP102" on the back. The "About screen" says Version 3.0.1 Model PE435 A, I take the "435" to mean gen 4. I told him I'm sure there are hacks on the web to fix all these issues, and that I heard you could put linux on them. But then I see that you don't have gen 4 yet. What would happen if I tried the OS X gui linux loader and tried to put linux on this probable gen 4 ipod? Would it just not work? Would it mess things up? Could I reinstall the firm ware? What's the stumbling point for getting the code to work on it? Is gen 4 firmware totally different or is it just that you haven't tested it yet? I'm hoping you'll tell me, that you don't know if it works or not and that I should try the loader with some debug flag on and that the loader is capable of reloading the apple firmware in case of screw ups. My friend isn't going to be here for very long so please email me back as soon as possible. Thanks and you should put the exact reasons why the gen 4's don't work on your wiki for future googlers. When I read "unsupported", I sometimes think "works but extremely buggy". - Peter |

If it's in continuous-reboot mode as you describe above you should just need to hold the magic keypress (ff+rew or select+play) for 10-20 seconds. Paul |

After successfully borking my entire Ipod by using the windows linux installer I am at a loss at what to do. I have a number of theorys that each require a little bit of assistance from you people. The situation is this, the Ipod (3g 20gb) boots, shows the apple logo, then promptly shows the folder with the x above it. It says like that for a few seconds, reboots and trys again. I can't seem to force it into disk mode but perhaps i'm doing it wrong (Resetting by turning hold on/off then holding menu and play pause. Then I hold ff and rewind when the apple logo appears) or whether it resets before I have a change to do it properly. If I plug it into the firewire port I get a do not disconnect message followed by a tick and a safe to disconnect message. The same thing happens with the usb cord however the computer claims it has an unknown usb device attached. My first question is, is the disk mode code stored on the hard disk or the bios? If it is on the hard disk it is conceivable I ca'nt get into it because I've overwritten something bad. Assuming I am going about getting into disk mode all wrong and I can get into it, I could possibly use the apple update to fix the partitions no? If I cant get into disk mode it looks like I'm going to have to open my Ipod up and take the hard disk out, as far as I can tell its a reasonably stock standard PCMCIA hard disk so I should be able to then plug it into my laptop, and assuming the backups the windows installer are of any use, restore my Ipod, failing that perhaps the data is stored in the upgrade program somewhere *Fingers crossed*. Will I have to repartition the whole lot, (I have linux) and if so what are the sizes/file formats? Would the upgrade work if I just formatted the disk? Would it allow me into disk mode then? And Suggestions? |

Hi Royce, at the moment there is a goog bit of data about how the ipod works as well as how our software works but its a little scattered and unorganised. It is getting better (we're currently putting together a wiki in the hope that this helps!) but in the mean time you'll have to go to the various sources to find what you're after. In the forums <http://ipodlinux.sf.net/forums> there are many posts where various parts are discussed. There's a lot in there but the signal to noise ratio is fairly low. The mail archive <http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=ipodlinux-devel> has been much quieter since the forums were started but there are probably a few interesting posts in there. Beyond that you have the actual source code, this is all available in CVS. The linux kernel is lin the 'linux' module but most of the interesting parts are in 'linux/arch/armnommu/mach-ipod' and 'linux/include/asm-armnommu/arch-ipod'. The bootloader can be found in tools/ipodloader. The current user interface can be found in tools/podzilla. The other resource we have is the irc channel (#ipodlinux on freenode). There are often 1 or two people online that can chat about ipodlinux. Since you've just bought your iPod, I'd assume you have a 4th generation or mini. This means that nothing we have actually will run on your model. We're working at getting some good code to reverse engineer but its taking some time. cheers, bern. Greetings, I just bought an ipod and I'm anxious to see what I can make the little beast do... Can anyone here direct me to some literature on how I might go about learning how the firmware works, writing bootloaders, porting the kernel to this architecture, etc. I understand what needs to be done, I just don't know how to go about doing it... I'm new to 'reverse engineering', but willing to learn. I'll be a CS graduate at the end of this year, starting honours, and I have much experience coding in assember (z80, but the point is that it's not scary for me =p). There is still a fair way to go before the kernel will boot on the 4th gen. Unfortunately the memory map seems to be completely different so we need to do quite a bit of reverse engineering work. I'm happy to report partial success getting ipodlinux to boot on a g4 ipod. As has been noted previously, these use a different firmware image format. Fortunately it looks like the differences are trivial. The format is the same as previous ipods, just with 512 bytes of padding added to the start of the image. I can now load modified firmware, but the memory map seems significantly different, hence "partial success". So far I've determined that main memory is at 0x1000000, on-chip ram is at 0x40000000, and the cpu id is stored at 0x60000000. Below are my changes to make_fw, and primitive attempts to get the bootloader working. I disabled most of the bootloader code as it just crashes, presumably because the address of the devices has changed. The bootloader still doesn't load the apple firmware properly. The menu works ok, but music doesn't play. I guess this means the coprocessor isn't handled properly. To ipodlinux developers: I am appreciative and amaze at all of the work that every developer, especially Bernard Leach, have contribute to the development of porting Linux over to the iPod. Regarding myself, I am planning on implementing as a part of my senior project at San Jose State University, the feature to transfer music by firewire from one iPod to iPod directly using ipodlinux. This project will consist of 3 other computer-engineering undergraduates. Should there be anything that we must watch for when doing this project in relating to uClinux and is it accomplishable within a period of 2 semesters? Thanks everyone. Hung Doan hun...@gm... |

The PP5020 should not be too big a problem, infact it should mean Linux runs somewhat better on the iPod (and the USB on-the-go possibilities are quite cool too). The real sticking point is that the 4g shares the new firmware image format that was introduced with the mini. Sofar this has not been reverse enginered and so we can't run custom applications (e.g. the linux kernel) on these models. If that problem were solved it probably would boot (depending on how backward compatible the '020 is of course). cheers, bern. ----- Original Message Follows ----- From: Jonathan Wang <jt...@MI...> To: ipo...@li... Ah, upon more searching it appears that the G4 iPod shares the PP5020 SoC with the iPod mini. Hi all, I tried loading iPodLinux onto a new 20GB 4th generation iPod from both MacOS 10.3.4 and RHEL 3 following the instructions in the installation guide at http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/installation.shtml Both attempts failed; the iPod fails to boot. The Apple logo is first displayed, followed by a folder with a caution sign on it. I'm interested in contributing to the project; how can I help? Thanks, Jonathan |

I have developed a new iTunesDB browser for podzilla. It provides browsing by song, artist and album so far. Adding other options is real easy however. The data is stored in binary trees to enable sorting (right now a simple alphabetical / track-number based algorithm is used). The data is extracted from the iTunesDB file using libitunesdb ( http://shamrock.dyndns.org/~ln/ipod/libitunesdb_0.4.tar.gz -- see the README for notes on compiling ). So far the parsing of the db is rather slow. It takes about 30 seconds for parsing, sorting, etc. of an 2285 song db. I think it is due to the fact that a lot of malloc()s/free()s are used. If that guess is correct I should be able to speed things up quite a bit. The strings are all stored as UTF8 to save space and speed up processing. I tried printing them correctly with microwindows using GR_TFUTF8 as an argument to GrText but then no text at all was drawn. I did not look much into the problem however. Perhaps someone else knows how to make microwindows render UTF8 text. Please let me know what you think of the patch. Best Regards Jens Taprogge The patch can be found at: http://shamrock.dyndns.org/~ln/ipod/podzilla_20040716.diff -- Jens Taprogge |

Thanks for the feedback. Yesterday I changed some buffering in podzilla which seemed to help a little. There is also a small change to the audio driver which I am testing which seems to help but hopefully we can get it to record smoothly. The headphone jack on the iPod is connected to the audio chips microphone input and this in mono only. The line-in is full stereo though. I'm not sure how the iTalk or Belkin microphone actually switches the iPod to recording mode but I would guess that it uses some extra signalling via the remote port. As long as the mic records without the iPod asking it to start it should work fine with Linux. cheers, bern. On Tue, 2004-05-25 at 17:02, Mathieu wrote: > I tested your work ! There is just a speaker. But, speakers are microphones in reverse. When you talk into a speaker it produces tiny currents that can be interpreted by a computer as sound. The computer can conversely send tiny currents to the speaker producing sound. The iPod's headphones have connectors for both so that the iPod can get all that data. This program just writes the data to file. So there is no serial communication to switch the iPod headphones into microphone mode. But I bet there is some serial communication between something like the iTalk or the Belkin voice recorder and the iPod in order to open up the special interface. Also, I doubt you can get stereo. Sorry I should have mentioned, the recording is for 3rd generation iPods only. First and 2nd generation iPods have a different audio chip which lacks the necessary ADC hardware. You can record by using the headphone jack (or I would assume a standard 3.5mm microphone) and the left channel. The line-in mentioned below is possible by plugging a stereo source into your line out plug on the dock... cheers, bern. Hi all, I have just uploaded a beta release which adds initial support for audio recording. Currently since there is still no mixer support its hardcoded to use the headphone microphone port however recompiling allows line-in recording. http://ipodlinux.sf.net/download/beta/uclinux-2.4.24-ipod1.tar.gz I have also uploaded a modifed version of podzilla that has a simple record/playback function built in. The recorded audio is 44.1kHz (mono) and saved to the file 'test.raw' in the current directory. Its pretty scratchy at the moment but that should be fixable. I'd be especially interested to anyone with a iPod microphone to see how it works. http://ipodlinux.sf.net/download/beta/podzilla The updated version of the audio driver exposed a problem in the mp3 playback program. A fixed version is also available. http://ipodlinux.sf.net/download/beta/mp3example To install the updated podzilla and mp3example simply copy them onto your iPod's root partition into the sbin directory. Please note, these links will disappear when a final release is added to the sourceforge download page: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=73079 cheers, bern. |
