That 'Do not disconnect' message is just a way to tell you that the hard drive would be in use and you could lose data if you disconnect it. From the computer point of view, you can write whatever you want at that point. To remove that message, execute the 'eject' command instead of just unmount the partition. I am working on a project where I had to detect and sync Ipod with a linux software. I am facing one problem when I connect Ipod to the linux machine. Ipod displays a "Do not disconnect" message and Ipod allows nothing else to do with it. One reason behind this Ipod's behaviour may be that Ipod is searching for Itunes software and trying to import songs from it and there is no Itunes for Linux. My question is : "Will it allow me to read/write data/songs from Ipod while it displays "Do not disconnect" message ? Regards, Vijay |

Hi, I am very interested in ipod Linux project - and I have a project in mind of my own which may use Ipod Linux to completely revolutionise the way Ipod users listen to and use their music. However due to the sensitivity of some of the subjects I wish to discuss, it is not possible to discuss them on an open mailing list such as this. Can someone please tell me who the main Ipod Linux Developers are (i.e. the project originator and anyone highly skilled in the reverse engineering of the Ipod hardware to make it compatable with Linux) so that I can discuss this proposal with them directly? Alternatively, could any interested developers contact me directly at this email address so that I can contact them with details of my proposal? This is a highly sensitive, but nonetheless extremely significant propsal - and may give a new and unique focus to the entire Ipod Linux project. No longer will it be the case that people might install Linux on their Ipods 'becase they can' indeed if my propsal bares fruit, Linux on the Ipod is likely to gain mass appeal - and every ipod owner everywhere will be keen to install it, simply because it will be an astoundingly useful thing to do. All replys are welcome. Yours faithully, GJ |

Hello, I'd like to know how to control the iPod via the Dock connector to get, for example, the recording mode -> AiR mode, or the current song which's beening played. I'm finding a lot of explainations about which code is making what, but I can't find anything about the connection itself. Is it in a bash shell??? I'm having a 1st generation iPod mini. Greetings, I've been playing around with an initrd for the ipodlinux kernel (and submitted a patch for it), and needed a couple of 'modules' to be compiled into busybox. So I downloaded the source and started playing around with it, but I'm having trouble. I am trying to compile losetup and pivot_root into busybox, thus allowing linux to run inside a loopback file on the FAT partition - avoiding the need to partition the ipod to install linux. The busybox binary included in the userland files for ipodlinux don't seem to have losetup included. When compiling, I am getting an error stating that some modules can't find "config/automake.h". I have automake installed, but none of the header files are ever under a directory named 'config'. Am I just stupid? Thanks, --Royce Ausburn persona/esapersona |

I'd be quite happy to see a gettext based prototype put together. I know there have been some problems (although I'm not sure of the specifics) using non Latin based character sets with Microwindows but even if we could get a basic screen with German/French/Timbucktooey on it running on the iPod that would be a great start. cheers, bern. ----- Original Message Follows ----- From: Pander <pa...@us...> To: Carlos Perell=f3 Mar=edn <ca...@pe...> Cc: ipo...@li... Dude, the iPod is not as slow as to think that gettext is eating too much cycles... The memory increase is there, yes, any extra library needs some extra memory, but your model needs that _all_ translations are loaded into memory all the time. Gettext only loads into memory the translations for the languages been used and I think it's possible to use mmap to reduce that memory usage, so what's the point behind thinking gettext is too memory waste? | |> I'm pretty new to the world of podzilla but performance wise I think we should |> be very careful on where to spend CPU cycles on. So you are assuming that translators will be happy doing their translations directly inside the podzilla source code and that they are going to understand how it works so they don't break that file, and when a new string appears is going to be easy for them to find it, translate and commit the new file... I'm a developer and my work is 100% related to translators and I could say you that if you pretend that podzilla is being used by many people that model is not going to work. Perhaps gettext is not the best solution but you should think on a system that is easy for the translators to work with. Also, it's not too hard to implement the translations handling with gettext, test and benchmark it and see if it works before assuming too much overload... | |> Perhaps there are mote suggestions? Hi all, I would like to propose the following internationalisation (i18n) of podzilla. Here are following proposals, please shoot at them ;) 1) The integer value of variable lang should be stored in /etc/podzilla.conf. in ipod.h is already: #define LANGUAGE 30 It can be used with: ipod_get_setting(LANGUAGE)] 2) Language codes will have to be defined in ipod.h: static int ENGLISH = 0; static int FRENCH = 1; static int GERMAN = 2; static int DUTCH = 3; This might nog be needed but a clear order should be defined and extended as more languages get added. 3) In .h or better in the .c files the translation should be defined. Here are three simple examples: static char *lang_language[] = { "English", "Français", "Deutsch", "Nederlands" }; static char *lang_play[] = { "Play", "Jouez", "Abspielen", "Afspelen" }' static char *lang_month[][] = { { "Jan", "Feb", ..., "Dec" }, { "jan", "fev", ..., "dec" }, { "Jan", "Feb", ..., "Dec" }, { "jan", "feb", ..., "dec" }, } 4) Example usage would be like this printf(lang_play[ipod_get_setting(LANGUAGE)]); 5) System output as errors and warning should not be translated since that makes it easier to refer on the internet to certain issues. Hi all, My name is Pander and I also would like to contribute to pozilla. I've many years experience with C, but last years mainly with C++ and Java, and I have an iPod 3rd generation. Nevertheless I would like to contribute on internationalisation of podzilla and develop a new application. More on this in seperate emails. Regards, Pander |

Hi everyone, I'm Eduardo Gonzalez. I own a 4th gen iPod and want to help. I know C, MIPS assembly, and I'm currently learning ARM assembly. I have some experience with limited resource programming (PalmOS mainly) and I'm a pretty long time Linux user. I'm going to spend this week reading lots of code and documentation since I've never worked with uClinux before. I hope I can start fixing bugs by this weekend. I want to help out mainly with 4th gen iPod development. I know very little about kernel development so I don't know how useful I can be, but I'll do what I can. |

This was flawless :) Now, when I try to dock the ipod to a windows machine they can't read the data partition, since it's HFS+. So, my question is, if I format the ipod on windows, will I be able to sync mac->ipod correctly? Will I have to update the ipod firmware from windows instead of mac also? ps. I got no windows machine at home, only mac and linux... -- Greetz, Antonio Vargas aka winden of network http://wind.codepixel.com/ Las cosas no son lo que parecen, excepto cuando parecen lo que si son. |
