Once that is accomplished then as long as it conforms reasonably well to the IPMIv1.5 or v2.0 spec it should work with ipmitool. (I have not tested with any V1.0 systems) For the system interface the OpenIPMI kernel driver in linux works great on most everything, but there are the occasional BMC qurik that requires special parameters to load or even a patch to the driver to take advantage of newly defined interfaces such as SMBus. Setting up for LAN access can be even more tricky. Usually the board will come with some sort of utility for enabling it, but that might require booting into a service partition or into windows. Alternatively once access is established through a kernel driver then its possible to enable the lan interface with IPMItool, either using the included bmclanconf script or by manually configuring with "lan set ..." commands. This can require some work or knowledge of the BMC as you need to determine what channel the LAN interface is on. The only ones I've personally been able to test are the Sun x86 boxes, but it should also work with other Intel-based BMCs and Dell systems and the next released version will work with Supermicro BMC as well. I've also had reports that it works on Itanium boxes. At one point I started to collect a list, and if people want to send me any details about what hardware works and doesn't work I will compile a table and put it on the website. I will try and get a rough table started based on reports from the archives... -duncan |
