The new laws issued by the Italian Governement during the year 2005, obosoleted the INRETE-PEC projects.
Since the new regulation requires for the signature of the S/MIME messages, high-end hardware HSM with pricetag in the range of the tens thousands Euros, we think this is not worth an Open Source project, since the reduced audience.
As Inrete we continue the project and we integrated such top of the line HSM, for our customers.
We are looking forward to the progress of the hardware (aka it's decreasing cost) and to the growth of the number of interested organizations, and we hope it will be worth to release as Open Source the new PEC2 software in the future.

In the docs page is now available a new version of the INRETE-PEC HOWTO. In the chapter 6.4 you can read how messages and receipts are placed in archive.
The new HOWTO is also available in the doc directory of the last release "inrete-pec_1.3.1.tar.gz"

The release 1.3.1 is now available in the summary page of the project.
