Hi, I don't know if this is still being maintained, but I and my class (I teach sociology at the University of Chicago) have found the software useful--I was at Stanford when it was developed and knew Dominic Widdows. I was wondering if there is an easy way to print the words highest on each of the various dimensions, and the documents highest on each dimension. All of the associate queries are documents and words relative to each other...and its not obvious to me how to get the complete (or even the ranked) word list relative to each dimension. Thanks, james |

Thanks, John. Infomap isn't being actively maintained, but I'll try to find some time in the next couple weeks to make a new release incorporating your patch. This *DBM stuff is probably our most frequently reported build problem. Hi, I've just been trying to build infomap on a Debian testing system with GDBM (and the development package) installed. The current configure script only looks for ndbm.h or gdbm/ndbm.h. On Debian-based systems, the relevant header is gdbm-ndbm.h. Please find attached a patch to configure.ac and env.h to a) look for gdbm-ndbm.h in addition to the existing header searches and b) include gdbm-ndbm.h if that's what the configure script found. This works fine here after an autoreconf. I hope this is of some use to somebody ;) Cheers, John. |

Hello, my name is Ravi, and I am a graduate student at the University of North Texas. We have been trying to use the InfoMap software to train models in Spanish. We know that it works flawlessly for English, and we stumbled upon the fact that the files 'valid characters' and 'stop list' need to be changed for it to function for any other language. However, it appears that we are having some character encoding issues, because it turns out that apparently the built model doesn't have vectors for any Spanish word which has diacritics. I noticed from the users' mailing list that there have been some issues regarding UTF-8 characters, and especially the following thread mentions that several functions in the C code will need to be changed to accommodate UTF-8 characters: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=20040311202335.GB22850%40Turing.stanford.edu The thread doesn't talk about the availability of such libraries in C, and it also doesn't talk about ~all~ the functions that would need to be changed. However, I was wondering if you have heard of similar issues specific to the Spanish language (which is specifically Latin-1) and how to resolve those? In the meantime, one workaround that I've been thinking about is replacing all the diacritic characters with my own 'special notations' in the training corpus as well as the stop list, (for example replacing N(tilde) with something like NXX etc.) This should work, but in case you have heard of another solution to this issue please let us know. That will save us the overhead of conversions at various levels in our project. Thanking you in anticipation, Sincerely Ravi ____________________________________________________________________________________ Never miss a thing. Hi Teshome, That's a new one for me. A quick Google search for "compiler cannot create executables" did turn up the following from the Ubuntu forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=17033 It looks like the problem is that some necessary C development files are not installed. The recommended fix is to install the libc6-dev, g++, and gcc packages using the following command: $ sudo apt-get install libc6-dev g++ gcc You might want to give that a try. You might also want to try http://code.google.com/p/semanticvectors/ as an alternative to Infomap. While we still try to answer people's questions via this list, Infomap is no longer under active development. As for Unicode, I don't think we support it. Hope that helps. Dear Rosario, Another user, Sverker Siktrom (sve...@lu...) posted about an fsign problem, and then wrote back to say the problem had gone away. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=5.1.0.14.2.20070119214127.0301ee60%40pop.lu.se I don't know if there's anything particular that Sverker did to fix the problem, you may try writing to him. I've also recently been working on a new SemanticVectors pakage, which is at http://code.google.com/p/semanticvectors/ So far there have been no installation or build problems reported at all, so you may consider trying out this package and seeing if it meets your needs. Hi Eve, No, I don't think that the carriage returns should matter. My memory is a little hazy, but I think any sequence of whitespace characters should be equivalent to a single space. Try a 'sudo chmod o+x /usr/local/bin/*', then you should be able to run infomap-build as an unprivileged user. In general the files in /usr/local/bin are intended to be world-executable, I'm not sure why they weren't installed that way. Thank you so much for the prompt reply! I tried your first suggestion (using ./infomap-build) and it worked, but I got a second error that was similar to the first (prepare_corpus: command not found) so I updated the PATH to include usr/local/bin instead. That gave me a permissions error, so I used sudo infomap-build instead and it worked like a charm! A quick question about corpus formatting: do carriage returns matter? My text is from Project Gutenberg which puts break after every 80 characters or so. I'm assuming that won't alter the final matrices but I just wanted to double-check. try ./infomap-build -s .... from that directory. Unix is weird in that it doesn't look for program files in the "current" directory. Alternatively, you can update your PATH to include /usr/local/bin/, but I would need you to tell me your current shell, pasting the output of echo $SH might do it. -- David On Nov 5, 2007 1:38 PM, Eve Forster <eve...@ut...> wrote: > I'm having trouble building models using infomap-build.
