Unfortunately, I don't know of any gpl'd fonts, but here are some:

I don't know of any gpl'd telugu fonts, however, here are some others:

Nice site. pothana font, freeware, author requests acknowledgement in
work using font.

code 200 font, don't  know if it's complete.

gautami font
comes with winxp, email me for more details.

That's all I know of. Are there any others?
Let us know which ones worked for you. If they do, perhaps you could
write a small howto that gaspar sinai can add to the yudit
page/download so others don't have the same problems you had.

Akruti gpl fonts are at http://www.fsf.org.in/software/software.html
 I have encoded the Tikkana TTF ( a gpl'ed font ), to unicode, wanted
to make it opentype. but not worked on it for a while.
