Most handhelds have a touch screen built in, so a localized gesture recognition interface built around a touch screen makes more sense than mimicing a regular "keyboard" using the limited screen estate available on these machines. In the open-source world, I'm aware of one gesture recognition package WayV [http://www.stressbunny.com/wayv/]. I haven't got around to studying it myself.
