I think it is a big mistake not to discuss Indix on this list. Imho it is the probably the best indic script renderer in the world. Definitely the best free one, not counting the folks in Redmond. I agree Koshy's points are well taken, and the empirical results are good. There are very compelling reasons to adhere to the X protocol. But is the X protocol the work of God? Is it unassailable? I remember Keyur's counterpoints as not being without merit.
