while I not a 'handbook' expert nor do I know for a fact whether the
following will actually solve your problem, but a very common mistake is to
use spaces while listing rules in Makefiles. For example
target: dependencies_whatever
cc -whatever
^^^^^^^^ <---- this should be a tab instead of spaces.
