I have to admit I have no idea of what's going on, but one thing
that causes completely mysterious effects is ILISP's *.lisp init
files compiled for an old version of CMUCL.  So if you have invoked
M-x ilisp-compile-inits with CMUCL older than 18c, you might want
to delete all the *.x86f files from the ILISP installation
directory, restart Emacs, start ILISP and then invoke
M-x ilisp-compile-inits again.

Since you mentioned only about having problems with ILISP commands
that communicate with the CMUCL subprocess, what about using the
listener directly?  I.e. can you say (+ 1 2)<ret> in the *cmulisp*
buffer and not get an error?  Are you using Emacs or XEmacs (what
version)?  Are you sure you have compiled the files for the Emacs
version you are using?  Do you have complex initialization code for
ILISP in your .emacs?  Just shooting randomly here...

I hope someone will come up with an idea of what's going on.
