      The Shopping List Report

The shopping list report prints a list of all plants which need to be purchased.  Optionally, mulch and annuals for next year may be included.  The list includes only items which have been placed onto the plan and have not yet been purchased.  Once the plants have been purchased, you should update the "purchased" column.

      Searching For a Particular Plant

      The Search Dialog
    </h2>

      To find a plant by name or by characteristics, choose Search from
the file menu.  This brings up the "Search" dialog. You can now enter some basic characteristics such as type (annual, perennial, etc.). As you enter the criteria, the text in the "Search Criteria" box changes to describe all the search criteria.

      Now click on the search button, and GardenSketch will search for a plant matching the criteria and show a list of the results in a result window.

      The results window shows all the plants matching at least one criterion and the percentage match, ordered from the best match on the top of the list.       When you select one item from the list on top, then the bottom part of the window will contain a description of the plant, along with its picture.

      The text may contain hyperlinks, much like a web browser. Any hyperlinks in the text will be underlined and in blue, like <u><span class="c7">this</span></u>.

      Selecting Multiple Plants

      To select more than one plant, shift-click more plant entries after one is already selected. This bottom section of the window will go blank, but will allow you to copy multiple plants into the document.

      Moving Plants to the Palette

      When plants are selected, click "Add To Palette" to add the plant to the Active Material palette on the plan view.

      For example, picking "Copy Selected to Palette" one the "results" window above will leave the material palette looking like this.

      Extra Criteria

      Many searches will require more criteria than what is available in the basic search window. Clicking on the popup menu along the left side of the dialog will select between many sets of search criteria.

	<p>There are two methods of specifying sub-plots, visually from a reference image (ex: aerial photograph) or as an offset from the overview plot.

      If you have set up an aerial photo for the overview plot, choose "Add Garden Plot," and use the red and blue markers to pick a subsection of your complete plan.<br><img src="../Images/GS_PlotOverviewImage1.jpg" width="300"><br clear="left">
      Items created on the subplot appear on the overview plot as light grey lines (as if through tissue paper). Items created on the overview plot appear the same way where they intersect a sub-plot.

The list pane holds information about the plants used in your document, or about available plants.  Each row between two solid lines is a group of plants of the same species.  Rows separated by dashed line are showing data for the same plant type in different years.

      Selecting a Row
    </h2>
    <p>
      To select a row, click on the icon <img src="../Images/GS_RowSelectIcon.png" width="16" height="19" border="0"> in column 1. The entire row will be shaded with a light blue color to indicate that it is selected.  Holding down the command key while clicking on any cell will also select the whole row.

      Editing a Cell
    </h2>

      To edit any cell in the list, click the cell without holding down any modifier keys (ex: Apple or shift). There are many different <a href="./CellTypes.html">types of cells</a>.

      Moving Between Cells

      All cells will select the next piece of information about the current plant (the next cell to the right) when you press the tab key.

      In the same way, pressing shift-tab takes you to the previous cell (the cell to the left), and pressing the return key takes you to the same piece of information on the next plant (the cell below the currently selected cell).

If a cell type could use tab as a valid value (ex: comments), then use option-tab to add the tab character.

      Resizing Columns

To resize a column, point the mouse to the right edge of the column,

The triangle with the larger side on the bottom indicates that the rows are increasing towards the bottom, while the opposite triangle indicates that the rows are increasing towards the top.  Fields are sorted without considering capitalization.

      Selecting a Plant or Other Element

      When the select tool <img src="../Images/GS_SelectTool.png" hspace="10" width="24" height="24" border="0">is active you can select or deselect elements in the plan by clicking and dragging the mouse in the plan. The option and shift keys modify the result of the selection. Once elements are selected, they can be resized, reshaped, or moved.
    </p>

      The ways that you can select and deselect elements are:
    </p>
    <p class="c2">
      Clicking on an empty area of the plan deselects all elements.
    </p>
    <p class="c2">
      Clicking on one element on the plan deselects other elements, and selects only that element.
    </p>

      Holding down the shift key while clicking on an element toggles the select status of that element.
    </p>
    <p class="c2">
      Dragging across the plan will draw a rectangle on the screen during the drag. All elements intersecting the rectangle will be selected, and other elements will be deselected. After the selections are changed, the drag rectangle will disappear.
    </p>

      When an element is selected, small squares called "handles" appear at points around the object to indicated that it is selected.

<h2>Creating Irregular Garden Borders</h2>
Before deciding on plans for your garden, it's useful to be able to draw the boundaries of the garden so that you can see how much space it available.  In this entry, I'll describe a method which works for totally irregular garden shapes.

	<li>Edit the garden plot size to a rectangle which is somewhat larger than the garden.</li><p></p>
	<li>Measure the size of the garden along its longest point.  Create a <a href="./Dimensions.html">dimension line</a> the size of the measured line.</li><p></p>

	<li>At regular intervals, measure in both directions away from the original line.  It's best to use the intervals of the grid on GardenSketch so that you can use the grid to align the measurements at right angles.</li><p></p>
