Hi all, I'm new to this list and excited to see an active community developing software for iRiver devices. I just received my first MP3 player, and iFP-890 (the 256MB flash iRiver). I thought I was going to go with a minidisc recorder or an iPod once I could afford one, but I'm so happy I discovered the iRiver. I'm a podcaster and I really wanted a device I could both record to AND listen to MP3 audio with, and the iFP-890 satisfies both of those requirements--and it seems to do it well. It also plays OGG, WMA, and ASF files--how much better can this device get? Since I'm a podcaster (and podcast listener), I'd really be interested in seeing an iPodder client for the iFP. I'm quite active in the podcasting community and would help get the word out if anyone developed an app that worked as the existing iPodder apps work with the iPod. Perhaps one already works that I'm not aware of--does anyone know? Thanks, and again, glad to join this list! Harold J. Johnson http://SomethingthatHappened.com |

Ok, so after skimming a couple of websites, I gather it's a sortof Shoutcast & Blog hybrid. What kind of hardware support do you need to participate? (For the record: yes I do live under and rock and I'm blissfully ignorant of the latest trends. For example, I only discovered bittorrent last week and I've been without instant messaging since AIM merged with ICQ. However, I'm happy to help anyone who wants to do cool stuff with their iFP devices.) Geoff On Tue, Dec 14, 2004 at 01:19:59PM +0100, Christian E. Hi everyone, It looks like I've been emailing this post to the wrong address; one of our poor members received twice already. (Sorry, Geoff!) I wanted to share what I know about podcasting, and why I think it's important to share the wealth of this important emerging means of communication with iRiver users. The iRiver device (i.e., iRiver developers and users) has much to gain by getting on board with podcasting. Every day a ton of people are finding that their MP3 device has so much more to offer than just filling it with commercial downloads. Here's why... I'm not a developer, nor a programmer, so I don't know much about the back end. Podcasting has become the term to describe this new and rapidly growing phenom that was started by a group of developers and users who wanted to have an RSS aggregator-like application that would be able to download RSS enclosures (any file) directly to iTunes and then, once plugged in, to an iPod or an iPod-like device. The application would include the ability to be automated so that it would check the feeds at set times. That way you could plug in your iPod in the morning and the downloaded files would automatically transfer to the device. (Or, with an iPod, you could leave the iPod plugged in at night so that you wouldn't have to wait for the files to transfer in the morning.) I believe the first client application was at first called iSpider ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/ispider/ ) and then became known as iPodder ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/ipodder/ ). This is an open source app which currently has clients for Mac, Windows, and Linux OS's. They're also working on jPodder, a java implementation of iPodder ( http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=421746 ). There are other iPodder clients, including iPodderX on the Mac side, Doppler, Nimiq, and Jager on the Windows platform, and Bash iPodder on the Linux platform. Podcasting is quite young, having originated just a couple of months ago, and every week more iPodder clients surface. As podcasting becomes more mainstream, more consumers will be looking for an iPodder client that works with their device--and of course, not everyone will have an iRiver. So will they be left out of the loop? Podcasting is changing the whole landscape of content delivery. It started with RSS aggregators, which primarily delivered text entries (at first). Then the iPodder clients began surfacing, mostly delivering audio. Now some users are realizing that the iPodder clients also have the ability to deliver video and other content, so that's taking off, too. I have an iRiver iFP-890, which is a bitchin' little device. I think this device blows away the iPod. The only problem is, the current crop of iPodders don't work with iRiver. At least, I don't think they do--maybe there's a way to get it to work. But since the iRiver doesn't show up in the Volumes directory (on OS X; mnt or media on Linux), I don't think the iPodder work with the device yet. Here's a link to the iPodder developers community discussion forum: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ipodder-dev/ Please contact me with any questions you may have! Sincerely, Harold J.
