In case anyone else runs into this issue, here is the response I got today from the comp.terminals Usenet group: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is a known issue that can cause PuTTY 0.58 on Windows to display=20 some characters in different scripts as blanks, described here:=20 <http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/wishlist/win-font-lin king.html> It's a side effect of support that was added for bidirectional text and=20 Arabic shaping. Help with fixing it welcome.=20 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ron Rodriguez -----Original Message----- From: icu...@li... Subject: RE: [icu-support] Displaying Japanese locale display name I can view the output file just fine in vi on the Linux host, and also in Notepad, when copied to the Windows client. All characters appear correct in both cases. I will proceed to post a question on comp.terminals. I'm finding other PuTTY questions there as well. Ron=20 -----Original Message----- From: icu...@li... Subject: Re: [icu-support] Displaying Japanese locale display name You could read the file on the linux terminal that you said was known =20 to work, or copy them to another system and view them. If ICU says it is outputting UTF-8 it sounds like an issue with =20 putty,.. perhaps font installation or some such. -s On 27 Mej 2005, at 10:52, Rodriguez, Ronald wrote: > OK, ucnv_getDefaultName() returns "UTF-8". > > >> Can you try redirecting the output to a file, and examine the bytes >> to see if they are utf-8 ? >> > > How do I verify that the bytes in the output file are UTF-8?
