I re-read your reply and another question arises. 

When you are mentioning "squid" in your reply,

are you referring to squid that is not patched with icap? Or 
are you referring to squid-icap-client? 

Aother question, 
You mentioned,

They puzzled me, :-). whether I should set the variable 
"http_proxy" in my case?
