Hi, could you please explain the counterargument tab and how to use, please? Say I have an argument ‘Smith’s argument for position_one’. The counter argument tab says (0) - if I navigate to it and click new, I can’t seem to enter anything that doesn’t result in ‘unable to modify record: there must be a corresponding verdict for every position / argument targeted by this record’.

    Hi Jenny,
In the argument tab, the parent records are the position(s) and/or argument(s) that the argument is responding to. You must also enter how the argument is responding--for example, the counterargument might be arguing that an original argument fails, or that it misses the point, etc. This is the verdict of the argument. So you just have to make sure a verdict is entered for each parent record. See the attached screenshot that shows where to enter the verdicts.

Hi there, it's this bit here that I'm having problem with. It's not automatically populated from entering arguments against (as far as I can see) and I can't see how to add a counterargument here without the error mentioned above. I'm sure I'm missing something about how to use this area

In the Counterarguments tab, when you click New, it will create a new argument record with the previous one assigned as a parent record. Then you have to click in the region I circled in the previous screenshot (under the Argues That column) and select a verdict. Then you shouldn't receive the error message. Does that help?

I'm still having problems, sorry. It's just this bit I'm not getting. . I'll do a walk through and try again.

    1. I create a debate ('first debate')
    2. I create a position ('important position')
    3. I create an argument for that position in the 'where made' (Fred Smith, work = 'an argument for important position')
    4. I click on the counter argument tab and click new
    5. I set name to 'a counter argument', and against 'Argument, Smith's argument for an important position' under 'argues that' I put 'argument fails'
    6. I get the same error.

Ooof, sorry, I'd not set the 'argues that' for the position as well as the argument. Sorry. Thanks for your help!
