You don't need to edit the big file.

Put the definition inside \HlxEval{ ... }, and include it in your text.
You can use \usepackage{XXX}, too, which will look for a XXX.hlx file.
Look at any .hlx file in the distribution for examples.  There's a
little bit in the manual about extending hyperlatex.
