Hello, I am using the interface speed to compute the % utilization of a network interface, but it does not seem to work on Linux. This is the code that returns -1 ifstat = sigar.getNetInterfaceStat(ifName); speed = ifstat.getSpeed(); This seems to work on Windows 32/64, Solaris, but not on Linux. I was wondering if this is a limitation of the OS, or the SIGAR API. In the documentation, it shows Supported Platforms: Undocumented. but list System equivalent commands: AIX: Darwin: FreeBSD: HPUX: /usr/sbin/lanadmin -g mibstats 0, netstat -i Linux: ifconfig Solaris: Win32: Thanks, Jean |

Hello, I missed your post! I did a lttle bit more research and looked at the 1.6.3 source, and found this line in the linux_sigar.c module: ifstat->speed = SIGAR_FIELD_NOTIMPL; Looks like this is not implemented for Linux yet! On HP-UX the hpux_sigar.c module contains this line: ifstat->speed = mib.ifSpeed; Thanks, Jean |

Hey Jean, I wrote some code which could possibly solve this problem and provide an implementation to retrieve the speed via a system call to the linux kernel. I have posted it on the development forum here: http://forums.hyperic.com/jiveforums/thread.jspa?threadID=10304&tstart=0 Lets see if it gets included in the next build. |

How funny we are on the same path it seems. I just dug through the C code as well and I was about to share the same information with you. @Doug - When will this be implemented? It seems you can reliably get this information from some various sources most notably: mii-tool -v <interface_name> -or- ethtool <interface_name> I'm almost inclined to write the code to do this feature. |

Funny I just posted this a few minutes ago and was wondering the same thing. I can confirm, I'm having he same problem on Linux 32/64 and a correct value is returned on HP-UX. I'm using sigar 1.6.3. |

I think there is a logic flaw in your test case. The program you've written is I/O bound on the output to the display. The CPU has far more throughput then the buffers present for stdout. You might want to do a comparison by getting the overall system utilization from the CpuPerc class. Use the Sigar.getCpuPercList() to do a summation calculation from the array of CpuPerc (Intel Gulftown processors can have up to 12 logical cores). Use 1 - Idle formula to get the overall system CPU load. Compare the above busy calculation to the ProcCpu values. They should be roughly similar. Another possibility is to run a computationally intensive program like Prime95 or equivalent on the system, take note of the PID using taskmanger or the ps command on linux and use that as the PID for your program. My development has shown the SIGAR code CPU values are accurate. |

Hi Doug, I've been having much success using SIGAR for performance monitoring. Great Job! I started to dig into the metrics available for network interfaces so I can calculate network interface utilization. I've been testing on Linux x86 and amd64 platforms. When i use the class NetInterfaceStat and the getSpeed() method I get a return value of -1 from this snippet of code: NetInterfaceStat netStat = session.getNetInterfaceStat("eth0"); System.err.println("speed = " + netStat.getSpeed()); On an HP-UX platform I get 100 000 000 (100 Mbits). I would like to know how SIGAR gets this attribute from the underlying platform from GNU/Linux kernels 2.6.*. I suspect I must not have something configured correctly. Thanks, Justin |

I prefer to use this line of code: File executionPath = new File(""); System.load(executionPath.getAbsolutePath() + "/lib/sigar-lib/lib/libsigar-amd64-linux.so"); This assumes that you have a program directory with the jar and a lib directory with the sigar libs. Mine looks something like this: /var/opt/programs/monitor-test/Linux64.jar /var/opt/programs/monitor-test/lib/sigar-lib/lib/libsigar-amd64-linux.so I've created different build targets with different main classes for each platform i want to support. Then I change the strings in the code to point to the different libs to load. |

Hello, Is it possible to get the XEON CPU model number (e.g. 5530) from SIGAR API? If this is not possible, is there a way to extend SIGAR to get this kind of information? Thanks, Jean |

Hi, thanks for response. Here is my code snippet: <code> public class RecordSystemPerformance extends SigarCommandBase { ... DiskUsage disk1 = this.sigar.getDiskUsage("/dev/hd1"); -> Exception on AIX ... </code> As I said, on windows and Ubuntu all works correctly. On AIX I can only record CPU, SWAP and Memory no I/O. What I forgot to say was that the Java Version on AIX is 1.5 (on Ubuntu and Windows -> 1.6) Makes that the difference? Maybe I am allowed to install 1.6 on AIX. |
