What you describe below should work, assuming no typos and everything placed in the correct files. Have you checked to see if changes to your long.html file are having any effect at all? With a default install, htsearch uses an internal copy of the templates and does not look at the files. You need to correctly configure the template_map and template_name attributes before the files will be used. With a default install, this usually involves nothing more than uncommenting the attributes in the provided configuration file. Btw you should probably limit questions like this to the htdig-general list. This is not really appropriate for htdig-dev.
