#269 3.2.0b6 kills Linux 2.6-SMP on AMD64

http://www.bmrb.wisc.edu is a 2xAMD Opteron machine
running Fedora Core 4. Attempts to index the site
with htdig 3.2.0b6 (rpm from FC4 distribution) result
in load average going up to 7, CPU usage is 99.9%
(presumably, one of the 2 CPUs: top output is not
very clear on multi-CPU setups), and the system
starts killing processes at random -- incl. new http
connections, existing ssh conections, etc., making
the server practically unusable. (Changing VM
overcommit strategy does not really fix it --
processes still get killed, just differently.)

In comparison, 3.2.0b5 on old SPARC Ultra-10 takes up
<50% CPU with load average of 0.8 and little effect
on overall performance of the system. (Of course, it
takes forever, due to much slower CPU, but it does
not kill the server).

Whether that's htdig's or Linux problem, htdig is
currently unusable on SMP x_64 Linux.
