It is simply a matter of priorities, not of a lack of knowledge on my part. I prefer not to have my hobbies take away from time/bandwidth that is being paid for by someone else. My thought was that the mailing lists would be the "I've got a emergency!" resource, not for normal background chatter. That said, I'm not going to be responding to this group again for a while, as the signal to noise ratio has gotten pretty bad.
