Thanks for the tremendous efforts of everyone involved!

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get the head to move.  I can toggle the 
lamp using either the scanner module or the libusb methods, but the head 
doesn't move during scans, it hums a little.  The scanner is fully functional 
under Win98.  My 3300C seems to have a slightly different chipset:

I am running SuSE 7.3 with kernel 2.4.16 (I also tried Mandrake 8.1 with 
2.4.13) on an AMD-K6, 350Mhz.

produces a green garbled fuzz/snow with brighter vertical lines--but, as I 
said, the scanner head did not move under the picture I was trying to scan.
