I noticed that the F11 command to "set all singles" works when I manually input a puzzle the first time ... but if I select File -> New Givens, the F11 command does not work for the new problem.
Manual input of a puzzle results in the numbers being Values, instead of Givens which are what is required for a valid puzzle. The same applies in both cases you mention, Tony. Fyi, by default, Values are blue and Givens are black.
So, it is necessary first to set your input numbers as Givens.
In the case of New Givens, you set Givens by using Play Game - then F11 will work as usual.
When Values are freshly entered, Play Game is unavailable. I don't know how that makes any difference to F11, but you can, in that case, use Modify Givens to activate Play Game in order to be able to set Givens.

You're welcome, Tony.
It is mentioned in the online User Manual, but, like a lot of things I find, doesn't seem to make sense until you've already figured it out by some other means.

Thank you! I had not noticed this distinction, nor the Play Game option!
