I had a look at the way you implemented this. Its really nice,
actually. I'm still not 100% convinced that it needs to be
automatic but I cant think of any compelling reason why it should
_not_ be so I'm inclined to use your patch.

The main difficulty with this is updating all 10 existing
dialects. hmmmmmm.....
