Having seen HexEdit recommended in MacUser, I have attempeted to download the applic via Safari 1.1, but neither its Download Manager nor Speed Download 2 will kick in, in spite of having downloaded 3 other items from other sites today.
Any suggestion gratefully received.

I think your Speed Download may be getting in the way; I do not use it and was able to download HexEdit from SourceForge (via the EasyNews mirror) in under 2 seconds with both Safari and Camino.
