The XEDIT Subcommand and Macro Reference manual
http://publibfp.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/hcse0c00.pdf, page 315 states that the newname operand of the SET PREFIX SYNONYM subcommand
"is a synonym to be assigned to a prefix subcommand or macro. The newname can be up to five alphabetic or special characters."
In order to allow prefix macros like SI to operate properly, special characters should be allowed in the prefix area.
