#22 Port for SGI O2 (IRIX)? Can I even compile?

I've purchased an SGI O2 workstation to do video
editing on. I've finally gotten ahold of a copy of
Adobe Premiere 4.2 for it, but it's old and I would
love to use Cinelerra on this great hardware! (MIPS
R5000 processor, DVLink IEEE-1394 card, SGI analog A/V
board)

Questions:

1) In the interest of doing crazy stuff just because we
can, as you guys stand for, can you see porting the
software to SGI IRIX (at least the O2?)
2) Would I even be able to take a crack at compiling it
myself, given the radically different hardware (and the
fact that I've never succesfully compiled any open
source software yet...I'm an assembly programmer)?
