OAuth2 confusion, Gmail and POP3

I am confused about this OAuth2 requirement to work with Gmail. I currently have specific app passwords to access Gmail through POP3. Despite warnings that this would be discontinued by now, it still works fine.

I only use Gmail because of its excellent automatic spam filtering. If POP3 is gone and this OAuth2 nightmare becomes reality, I will leave Gmail as it will be useless on my phone's email app (K@ Mail).

I do hope OAuth2 capability is better supported in the new Eudora. User implementation seems like a pain in the ass right now.

    Any input appreciated.

gmail app passwords still work for now. Aurora/Hermesmail does not natively support OAuth2. You have to use a proxy which can be complicated to set up properly. But it can be done.

Yes we are. If you can get it to work for both send and receive pop3 email let us know. It is not actively maintained; simonrobs is. It hasn't been integrated into Aurora -- Pete looked at that and decided it was too complicated at least for now. Code is in Python, not Pete's expertise.

I just posted in another thread but thought it might be worth linking here too as it took me a while to find. The email oauth proxy by simonrob that it seems like a lot of people are using is quite tricky to set up. But there's a link on simonrob's page to auth-email.com which is working perfectly for me.

Auth-email.com is not free. I will never pay for this!

I still use Gmail with app passwords just fine. All I've been reading is that it will go away. Well, here we are years laterand it still works - oh, and with pop3 no less!

Fair enough. For me, $3/month is a price worth paying to keep Eudora going.

I still don't understand this OAuth2 thing. I use Gmail POP3, mainly for spam control, have application passwords and it still works fine in Eudora. I also use my personal domain accounts with my hosting company (A2 Hosting) and, again, no issues. This after years being told we need OAuth2.

What host are you using that you must have OAuth2?

I do hope the team incorporates this in the Eudora release. I have paid for 3 licenses, having gladly done so. I still use Eudora, not Aurora, as I'm waiting for a stable release.

I'm using Outlook and Gmail, both of which I think require OAuth for everything now.

I haven't set up an application password in Gmail because I don't want to give Google my phone number.

In my experience, both your statements are incorrect:

    1. I do not have OAuth enabled, been running Eudora and Gmail for over 20 years.
    2. Gmail/Google does NOT use my phone number!

You may want to revisit setting up those app passwords.

I just checked my Google account settings again and there's no option to create app passwords. There are a few search results about a similar problem, and some mention phone number, though maybe that is not the case given your experience.

Either way - and more importantly! - how are you connecting to Gmail without OAuth?

Again, I have specific app passwords for several PCs and phone. That's it. Been like that for years.

You may have to enable 2-factor authentication but I don't use the phone for that.

If you must provide a telephone number, just get a Google number for free!

Ah, sorry – I misunderstood. So the rule is: OAuth everywhere unless you have 2FA, in which case you can set up app passwords.

Since I've already subscribed to auth-email.com and it is working really well for me for Outlook and Gmail, I'm going to stick with it. But thanks for the advice. Good to hear there are other Eudora users out there keeping it going!

I would immediately setup 2FA with app passwords as a backup in case your current setup fails.

I also have my main Gmail account just forward to another Gmail account. I only receive emails from the second account and don't touch the first - all POP3. This way if there's ever an issue with the second account I can still access the first. There should never be an issue with the first since I don't regularly touch that.
