The "-i" (lowercase) flag is very specfic to the Linux ATA and IDE drivers.

Use "-I" (uppercase) for other types.

    apologies, I had tried that:

    hdparm -I /dev/sdc

    /dev/sdc:
    SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]: 72 05 20 00 00 00 00 1c 02 06 00 00 cf 00 00 00 03 02 00 01 80 0e 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Okay, no version info provided. Try again with latest hdparm from thsi site, and try with different kernels. This used to work, so perhaps an update to the kernel has broken it.

    Version is hdparm.x86_64 9.48-1.fc23 installed

I installed this one because the rhel7 default one wasnt working, platform is centos7

what kernel was this working on?

any other options to disable write cache on the sas drives? (thats pretty much all I need to do)

    Thank you very much

It has been a few years since anyone last checked/reported using hdparm on SAS drives, so the kernel would have been from a long time ago.

Meanwhile, for the write-cache, you might have luck with this:

    blktool /dev/sdc wcache off

in the end I solved using sdparm, as in sdparm --set WCE=0 /dev/sdc

      thanks for your help anyway
