I have been using the tc-7 tomcat-jbdc pool provider as a replacement, except inside tc 6. (http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-7.0-doc/jdbc-pool.html)
It performed a lot better for us than the others we tried, (bonecp, c3po, commons-dbcp).
The end goal was to find a more portable means of active/passive balancing, than say like HAproxy. and I heard good things about ha-jdbc.
