I think we can make Gxsm depend on fftw, so that it cannot be disabled any longer, these conditional are making me somehow fuzzy... and I do not like testing always (or missing to test) without this stuff.
Would this be OK or is there any strong reason against it?

I agree that we should remove all fftw related #ifdefs as fftw seems to be pretty standard by now.
