Following John's clue I searched my system for the development libraries, but they aren't there; they are not on the distro CD or ftp site either. I'm researching it; if I find useful info I'll post it here.

Slackware 9.0 (current vrsn) is using Gnome 2.2, but is not the vanila gnome; itis a "tweaked Gnome for Slackare". More info can be found at sourceforge or their wave page www.dropline.net.

Other things which have changed -- there is a fftw version 3.x series,
which *won't* work with gwc, they redefined the subroutine calls, so it 
will take some effort to get that reconfigured.  You have to be sure to 
use the fftw 2.x series.

Gnome 2 libs are out too, and I haven't investigated that either.  I'm 
unfamiliar with slackware and which version of gnome they may have by 
default.  It's summer, what can I say ;-)
