Well I would argue that using alsa-oss changes the alsa configuration, 
and that alsa-oss is a bit of a kludge (you may find that the audio 
lags, for example). But the main thing is that it works for you!

You may find some time in the future that alsa-oss is no longer available...

I wonder if using gconf-editor to configure the audio settings would 
also work, for those using Gnome?
