I had the same problem a few weeks ago on Ubuntu 10.10.

The problem is that with the version shipped with Ubuntu you cannot set 
the playback device to hw:0,0.

I installed the latest gwc from source 
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/gwc/, gwc 0.21.12) and now it's 
possible to play files again ;)
