I'd already tried those ideas, however with a little bit of fiddling and (mainly) looking at where Amarok tries to send things I've solved the problem. There were two separate issues: 1) On the Envy24 cards, ALSA hw: devices only work if the audio matches the device i.e. 24 bit 96 kHz. 2) Although the on-board sound is supposed to be disabled, that is device 0 and the Midiman is device 1.
