James, This might help. In GWC, click Settings, then Miscellaneous. Under Audio Device, I had to put hw:0,0 to get it to work under ALSA. I used to have /dev/oss but that seems not to work under Debian Lenny or I didn't install a module. But that alsa setting does work for me. However, I would have guessed you would have gotten an error if that was the problem. Worth a shot.
