[Gwc-general] Silent playback

I've just recently been trying to use gwc after a longish layoff.

Unfortunately I'm now not getting any sound on playback.
I'm using Kubuntu 9.04, with a built-from-source gwc (I've also tried the 
version in the repositories with the same result, but that wouldn't be usable 
for normal work as the logging of click removals slows it down too much for 
78's).

I have tried both with and without the --enable-alsa option in the configure. 
I suspect that the problem related to the Envy24-based sound card (Midiman 
Audiophile 2496)  but I can't see what's wrong. When I play from gwc I get no 
sound and nothing shows in the PCM monitors in envy24control, but it's fine 
when I play the sound file with aplay, alsaplayer or amarok.

Does anyone have any clues as to what might be going wrong.
