Build 6 (http://sf.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3D642&package_id=3D15= 7871) of the Toolkit is now available. This version adds a very basic 3D rendering API over OpenGL. The additions are described in the Graphics section (http://gut.berlios.de/documentation/api/graphics) of the documentation. The Premake bug from the last build has been resolved in the most recent release (http://premake.sf.net/). I am starting work on a networking system for Flat Four (http://flatfour.sf.net/). This is the first time I've implemented a networking system and I will need some R&D time. Next month's release of the Toolkit might be a bit skimpy as a result. Enjoy! Jason |

Build 5 (http://sf.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3D642&package_id=3D15= 7871) of the Toolkit is now available. This version adds mouse support, and also game controller support (Windows only at the moment). The additions are described in the User Input section (http://gut.berlios.de/documentation/api/input) of the documentation. _Please note!_ There is a bug in the latest version of Premake. If you are trying to build the Toolkit on Linux or Cygwin, please type `premake --clean --target gnu`. If you don't include the `--clean` it won't work. This will be fixed in the next release of Premake. In an effort to make this library somewhat useful I have started porting over the graphics code for the next release. This will be a simple abstraction layer, nothing fancy. While I supported both OpenGL and Direct3D in my prototype work I will most likely stick to OpenGL for the immediate future. If someone else would like to have a crack at the Direct3D code I'd be happy to hand it off. Enjoy! Jason |

Version 0.1.4 of the Toolkit is now available. You can find it in the Download section of the project website at http://gut.berlios.de/. This build includes basic support for keyboard input. The next builds will add basic mouse and controller support. Documentation for the input API is available on the website. A public Subversion repository is now available, thanks to BerliOS (http://developer.berlios.de/). Instructions for accessing the repository are, you guessed it, on the website. Enjoy! Jason |

Build 0.1.3 of the GameGuts toolkit is now available. The main website is currently down (more on that below), so get it from the SF.net project page at http://sf.net/projects/gut/. I'll be using the 0.1.x releases to port over the platform abstraction code, which includes window management, timing, user input, and event handling. This first build includes basic windowing and event handling; all of the new functions have been added to the documentation. As for the website: SourceForge is having some trouble with their database servers. A hardware upgrade is planned which will hopefully fix the problem. I am waiting to see how it turns out before I decide what next steps are needed to get the site back online. Thanks, and enjoy! Jason |

Greetings to everyone on the "gut-users" mailing list. It has been almost four years since there was an update on this project, and I imagine most of you had forgotten all about it. For that reason I wanted to give you all fair warning that I am about to bring this project back from the dead. If you have moved on to other things and would prefer not to receive updates, you can change your subscription using the link below: http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/gut-users For those of you who would rather use a web-based discussion board, I have enabled the SourceForge forums at: http://sourceforge.net/forum/?group_id=642 I have spent the last few years continuing to putter away my nights and weekends working on my driving simulator. I have amassed a decent collection of low-level code which will be the basis for the new version of the toolkit. I will be pulling it out of the main codebase and branding it little by little; look for the first release in the next couple of days. If you have any questions, feel free to respond to this email. Thanks, Jason Perkins |

Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_de.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Obviously this sounds like a driver bug. I already
have a couple of other workarounds under the hood to
handle Voodoo context switching issues, so I guess
this isn't a big surprise. I assume that you are using
the latest OpenGL drivers, as published by glsetup
(http://www.glsetup.com/)? Have you tried running
Quake or another OpenGL application?
Under Win32 and Linux, you may be able to get away
with locking the context in OnInitGL() and leaving it
at that. It won't work under BeOS, and I'm not sure
about MacOS yet.
Unfortunately I don't have a V4 so I can't help
diagnose the problem further, other than to say that I
have tested this code on a V1 and a V2 and works okay
there.

When rendering a particular scene (>10k triangles) the computer freezes
after running for about 20 minutes. The following code is used:
void OnFocus() {}
bool OnIdle()
{
if( LockGL() ) {
Draw();
UnlockGL();
}
return true;
}
It does not crash when rendering in wired frame (glPolygonMode())
OR when reducing the number of LockGL() calls:
bool focus;
bool OnIdle() { if(focus) Draw(); return true;}
void OnFocus(bool focus_) { focus=3Dfocus_; if(focus) LockGL(); }
The harddrive is accessed when switching to wired frame,
so I assume it is a driver problem.
I'am using a voodoo4 4500 AGP.

I spent the weekend trying to back off my Linux install to RH6.1 so I could undo the havoc of my latest library "improvement". Unfortunately there seems to be a bug in the RH installer which prevents FTP installs of this particular version -- when it rains it pours, eh? Anyway I have ordered a CD copy of 6.1, which should be here later in the week. Once I've had a chance to confirm that everything is working properly, I will release 0.5.1. Jason 379 |

An update: the problem appears to be isolated to RH6.2. I'm no closer to solving the problem, and I haven't heard anything from the Mesa list since the weekend. So...I guess I'll just release what I've got with the appropriate caveats, and hopefully someone somewhere will be able to resolve the problem before too long. In the meantime, Linux/3Dfx users are going to be out of luck. Not happy about it, but I really can't afford to spend too much more time on this right now. Jason 379 |

I have posted it to the Mesa-users list, we'll see what happens. In the meantime, I've checked my current codebase into cvs, configured to dynamically load the GL library. I don't know if any of you have the Mesa-Glide driver installed, but if you do, you should be able to build the library and the "Testbed" sample and see what I'm talking about firsthand. To switch back to a static link of GL, change the GUT_USE_DYNAMIC_GL constant in gut_settings.h This latest codebase also has the gut namespace changes in it (no more 'v8' prefixes) so it might be worth grabbing anyway if you've got the time. A tarball should be up in the development section of the website tomorrow morning. Hopefully I can get this squared away soon, I'm anxious to move on to bigger and better things... Jason 379 |

With such a simple program to demonstrate the bug, the Mesa people
should be able to find that out...

Ahh, the wonders of atexit(). Maybe you should file a bug with Mesa?
There might already be one...

Hey all,
As per the conversation we had a couple of weeks ago
on this very list, I've been trying to make the GUT
Linux/X client dynamically load the OpenGL library.
Well, I'm here to tell you that it isn't working. I
have the code in place, and it works okay on the s/w
version of Mesa, but it chokes all over the Glide
driver. To see what I mean, try this with Mesa-Glide:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <unistd.h>
#include <dlfcn.h>
int main()
{
void* lib = dlopen("libGL.so", RTLD_GLOBAL | RTLD_NOW);
dlclose(lib);
return 0;
}
It'll core dump somewhere in the CRT library while
trying to exit.
Anyway, that's where I'm at. At this point, I'm inclined
to bail on this and put the statically linked version
back in place. I'll give it till the end of the week to
come up with a solution. If anyone can help me out with
an answer here I sure would appreciate it.
