Automatic module loading is performed by the hotplug system, which isn't in the buildroot, so you will have to load the usb_storage and the host controller modules manually. The host controller driver will be one of uhci_hcd, ohci_hcd, or ehci_hcd. You should still see something in dmesg along these lines when you have the host controller driver loaded: usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 which simply acknowledge that a new device has been noticed by the usb host driver. Association of the new device with the usb_storage driver will be logged more or less like this (this sequence with on-demand loading of the storage driver): SCSI subsystem initialized Initializing USB Mass Storage driver... scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices usb-storage: device found at 3 usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning usbcore: registered new driver usb-storage USB Mass Storage support registered.
