Keith, where's the connection refused message showing up? Does /var/log/messages say anything on the gumstix? Can you open a connection on the console serial port on the gumstix at the same time and watch that? And watching ps on the gumstix, do you see the getty running against /dev/rfcomm0 there? What if you change the startup script stuff on the gumstix to start something other than a getty there, say a shell script which just waits for a keypress or something then dump some output then exit cleanly -- then check if when you connect you just get that output dumped.
