It may take upto a minute (not sure of the exact amount of time) before the DHCP will be acquired. If you boot the gumstix with the USB cable unplugged, wait 15 seconds, and then plug the cable in, it should "connect". I typically use XP's network connections to see if it connected OK. It may take an additional minute before the DHCP address is acquired. As for determining the IP address, you can either sniff for it, or sometimes your DHCP server will tell you. I have a Linksys 802.11g WAP, and I can use the web browser to find out all of the current DHCP leases. I find that the DHCP address for my gumstix is typically within a few addresses of the one assigned to my laptop.
